whether washington can work out a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff. stocks rising, well, modestly is a big, strong word for what happened. technology stocks helping the dow up 15 points. the s&p up a fraction, the nasdaq rose nine. trading light. technology stocks strong in the market, and i'm speaking, obviously, comparatively. hewlett-packard setting the tone, leading the sector, not commenting on speculation that carl icahn has been amazing a position in the stock -- amassing a position in the stock. cisco systems -- mcdonald's, also a dow stock rising on news that sales rose 2.5% last month. that stock up just about 1% today. piper jaffray calling apple a $900 stock based on fundamentals. it may be, but it's got a ways to go after today, apple losing $3.43 on the day, $8 above its low of the session and trading slightly higher in after hours. crude oil prices down on the day for a fifth straight session closing at 85.56, the decline in crude also showing up at the pump. the average price of a gallon of gasoline dropping 11 cents, and we're looking at an average price of $3.34 a gallon.

about the fiscal cliff, that is obvious. everybody is sitting back and waiting to see if washington can actually get something done. if political agendas can get it aside and think about the devastation that probably occurred with the fiscal cliff. the spring selling season begins in late january. we have been the bright spot in the economy. our industry are creating jobs, we're coming back in the early stages of a recovery so the fiscal cliff january 1 would have a huge impact on the country, and impact on our business, and we have our fingers crossed and are very hopeful washington can get something done and we'll have to see. but if they don't, there is no question there will be a little bit of time until things settle down when the buyers will hit the sidelines. liz: will it derail the tentative recovery here? >> right now we are three weeks away from this fiscal cliff date and we're still selling houses. i don't think it derails it, but there could be a pause until things get worked out. liz: part of it is being discussed, and that is the possible elimination or at least the cuttin

concerned are you that markets will have to take to get lawmakers to reach a deal on the fiscal cliff and what you make of their recent complacency? is there a wall street washington disconnect? >> interesting question. i certainly hope markets will have to tank. i certainly -- we want to have confidence not just in markets but businesses and households as well and the best way, for fiscal policymakers can achieve that is by coming to a solution as quickly as possible. markets have already responded to some extent the band down. you see from day to day how they respond to news about negotiations. on the other hand it is also true, if you look at the experience, very informative experience of the debt limit debate in august of 2011, both confidence and markets remain pretty sanguine, of to pretty close to the point that it looked like there was a chance the debt limit would not be raised. and then, of course, there was a shark shark particularly to confidence about the time of the final debates. it is not unusual to see markets being complacent. of course, there is market point of view

john boehner sent a counteroffer to president obama to fend off the fiscal cliff. in a response to an offer made by the white house yesterday, we go to rich edson from washington, d.c. with the latest. rich, any response from the white house on this? >> still working on that. aids say in exchhnge of proposals taken place, some movement, but still major differences between the white house and speaker's office. fox news reports the speaker and president just spoke on the phone. white house folks say there's a sign of movement. a senior house aide says the white house reduced the demand for tax revenue increases from $1.6 trillion to $1.4 trillion, well short of the latest republican offer of $800 billion, though, there is another offer on the table from republicans that the details are unknown. boehner spokesman says we acceptability the white house a counteroffer to achieve reform to solve the crisis. we're still waiting for the white house to identify which spending cuts the president is willing to make as part of the balanced approach. fox news is reporting senior white house o
